In 2016, ecotourism initiatives launched in two Abu Dhabi locations. The Mangrove National Park encompasses 19 square kilometers of mangrove forests, making it home to nearly 75% of mangrove forests in the UAE along with other blue forests such as salt marshes and algal communities. Additionally, Jubail Mangrove Park encompasses a mangrove boardwalk with 3 kilometers of walking paths. Sustainable Development Goals Met:
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize that current models for economic growth are insufficient to provide for all people given resource and climate limitations. The SDGs, agreed by all parties of the UN General Assembly, are an international commitment to improve the outcomes of economic development for people and the planet. SDGs are focused on a variety of topics from poverty, hunger and well-being, to climate change, inclusivity, and infrastructure.
Harnessing the value of blue forests is an opportunity for coastal and island nations to achieve X of the 17 SDGs, fulfill national social, economic and environmental policies; and meet various international commitments, including on climate change and biodiversity conservation.
